Daylilly 2

I had a wonderful time photographing Daylilly flowers and the man who grows then. He had the most unlikely name for somone who’s in to growing pretty flowers, Blaize.

Portraits of Molly Comments Off

I photographed Molly for the paper last week. She’s being featured in our weekly artist profiles. Usually we feature the artist and their art together in one photo, but what do you do with a singer? We just walked around and found some neat spots in Peace Park to make some nice portraits.

New York Times, Paper Cuts and a face full of pie! 1

Picture 7

The New York Times blog Paper Cuts ran a photo of mine I put on the AP wire while a staff photographer at the Grand Island Independent. The photo has to be over 5 years old. I’m still trying to figure out why a blog about books is using a picture from a Fourth of July pie eating contest in a post about a Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service program. But that’s not really the point of this post.

There are two points. First is the photo ran with out a caption, leaving the readers with the task of connecting the dots. Apparently some of those dots include ox blood. And point B is New Yorkers need to visit us on the “No-Coast” and get an idea of how most of this country lives. Who in their right mind hasn’t seen a good ‘ole pie eating contest before?

I found the comments and criticism of my photo quite entertaining!

“What an incredibly alarming photo.” – Liz

“Can anyone say “child obesity epidemic”?” – D

“Actually I’m pretty sure those first comments are expressing alarm at a child whose face looks covered in blood like some cherub zombie.” – Joe

“Utterly distasteful photograph in my opinion….” – Johan

Of course there are some comments explaining the photo and even complementing it. But what fun is that?
